The (melting) Snows of Kilimanjaro

After struggling up the ‘highest mountain in Africa, highest volcano in the world, highest free standing mountain in the world’, aka ‘Kili’, I reflected upon this clip from Flight of the Conchords.

I found myself throughly agreeing with Bret, so no, I probably wouldn’t climb the highest mountain, or do all those other things for ‘you’ (whoever you in the future may be).

However, it was a very rewarding expereince, and yes, both Dad and I made it to the ultimate summit, which is more than the Belgians who were climbing the same route at the same time as us – that’ll teach them for walking too fast.

Despite the severe altitude sickness and a couple of visits to Chunder town, we made it to the absolute summit of 5895m after 7 hours and 40 minutes of hiking through the night. It rocked.

At some point, I’ll write a full journal, which will hopefully be useful for those planning to do a similar thing and get some photos up somewhere useful, like Flickr. In the meantime, friends can check out some pictures on Facebook.
